Here’s a short teaser trailer for the documentary about our trip to Belgrade, Zagreb, and Spoelto. I’m awkwardly in most shots, and it has never been more apparent to me than now, that I have to get a haircut.

Funding is a bit tight, but this is going to be a SICK opportunity once this happens. You can secure your tickets to see the play when we get back (post jet-lag) AND share a beer with me at the after party! Click the title of the blog post to check it out.
If we make funding, I’ll actually be able to pay rent for the month of September on purely musical standards, which is a HUGE goal to meet as a recent college grad.
Volume 1: The Back Story
The History:
I originally wanted to call this “The Living Room Series,” but decided against it since The Living Room is a well known and well branded Lower East Side music venue. Regardless, the sessions had been an idea I’d been throwing around for a while. I…
I’m so happy to be able to spend an afternoon with these folks. I didn’t know what the hell I was doing/playing till I get there (hence the complete AWKWARDNESS on my part.) But hopefully there will be more to come from The Orchard Sessions and Talia Billig in the very near future!
I’m working on a few songs as we speak (and applying for day jobs too! hooray) and I will hopefully have them up at the end of the week! Stay posted.

Alright alright alright. I’ll make this quick. (Depending on how fast you read.)
Update #1: Graduated College
So long The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music! It’s been a good three years (I transfered from Montclair State University after spending my freshman year there). I don’t believe that it’s over yet, but I’m sure I’ll feel it once August comes rolling around again.
I’m impressed the way my life has gone so far, and the amount of awesome people and great music I’ve been exposed to is so important to me. I’ll be sure that doesn’t end or slow down in my post-college years.
Update #2: Bern Jazz Festival
A great week playing in Bern, Switzerland. It was my first time out of the United States and it was the most eye opening experience. The way that country is set up, runs, and looks is totally different than the way we do it here in the states. Coming back to New York makes me realize just how young this city and this country really is.
Musically, it was great too! I played with my good friend Ben Murphy (aka Ben Murphy Bass…. long story.), Max Zooi and the leader of the group, Dida Pelled. It was great to play straight ahead for a while. It’s such great music, and the audience in Bern seemed to be really into that style, which is a nice change of pace from New York.
I had the chance to see a few bands play in Bern, and I can say I like the New York scene a lot more. More specifically, Brooklyn. It seems to have it’s own sound that others from around the world either can’t or struggle to replicate. I have a newfound interest in the local culture over here again.
Update #3: Everything Else
Perhaps this is just a “Note-To-Self” section, but who’s even made it this far down on this post? I moved a drum set into my room, dampened the hell out of it so I can at least practice to keep my chops up. I’m trying to get some shows in July with Tom’s band, and possible one or two with a stripped down version of my own. I’m possibly doing a collaboration with Talia Billig in mid June as well! I’d like to start collaborating with more singer-songwriters this summer as well!
I might be making my way to LA and Seattle in mid-late July!
Otherwise, life in New York is under way, and I like the amount of traveling I’ve done, and I hope to keep it going as life moves forward.
Cue the New York Grind…
Matt Wilson with Strings last night at the Winter Jazz Festival in NYC was SO GOOD. One of the highlights of the evening. Here’s there set from Newport Jazz Festival. I’m pretty sure it was the same set.
This has been a tough year, but a year I will not forget. There has been so much good music brought to my attention this year. Here are my top hits.
New School Professor of the Year:
A Tie!
and
Performance of the Year:
Composer of the Year:
Runner up Composer of the Year:
and finally,
Album Of The Year
Also, something worth mentioning. Perhaps it is because I live in New York City, or perhaps not, but every person mentioned here has lived/is living in New York. Coincidence, or is New York really that cool? Cheers to the end of a tough year, and here’s to looking forward. (Graduation? Aye!)
… wait WHAT?! this actually happened?
HOLY CRAP! this actually happened! only if they had it on vid-HOLY CRAP THEY HAVE IT ON VIDEO!
uhh, this is one of those rare moments that people dream of. Going to a show, and having these artists that sell out #$@#$ HUGE venues, come and play at a small club (though by new york standards, the blue note is a fairly large venue).
I can’t get over how awesome that this even happened, let alone that they caught it on camera. holy crap.
It always impresses me what most musicians are capable of. Alan Hampton, a prominent jazz bassist, who tours around with some of the heaviest hitters in the jazz world, is apparently an extremely talented singer/songwriter. I probably shouldn’t be surprised, but I pleasantly am. This is from a live show in NYC, and sports an all-star cast.
Alan Hampton – acoustic guitar/vocals
Josh Mease – bass
Lisa Harris – vocals
Nicole Hurst – vocals
Robert Glasper – piano
Jason Moran – piano
Kendrick Scott – drums
this should make you want to listen to it. right now.
